Depending on the system design and refrigerant used, the oil in the crankcase can become more enriched with refrigerant during idle periods. The consequences of this are increased oil ejection, hydrolocking and reduced lubrication when the system is next started. In critical cases this can lead to compressor failure. Using an oil sump heater ensures the refrigerant concentration remains at a safe level in most cases.
